MFAH: Explore the Blue and White Exhibit

In early March, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston hosted an informative virtual tour of their exhibit, "Between Sea and Sky: Blue and White Ceramics from Persia and Beyond." Emily, our designer in chief, was fortunate to catch this wonderful presentation that explored the history, techniques, and artisans of Persian and Asian ceramics, as well as the modern production of ceramic arts. The cultural influences of this centuries-old art form can still be found in tableware and entertainment trends today.

History of Blue and White Ceramics

In the 14th century, Chinese craftsmen discovered a way to decorate their highly coveted kaolin clay (i.e. porcelain) with new, exotic cobalt ores that just arrived from Egypt. In addition to trading ceramics, the artistic, cultural, and economic ideas were newly exchanged between the cultures of Persia (now Iran) and China via their trade routes from 900 to 1900 AD. Because of the success of these trades during the Ming Dynasty in the 15th and 16th centuries, these items became icons throughout Asia, soon expanding throughout Europe, and the globe.

Symbolism and Ceramics

The imagery on the ceramics took inspiration from the values, cultural traditions, and religious beliefs of the makers, which became adopted by the various countries that acquired them. For example, The Lion and Sun Dish from Persia represents Kingship. The magnificent Peacock design from Poland was designed in honor of royal clients. The Blue Willow collection tells the story of two star-crossed lovers. And the Bleus D’Ailleurs collection from Hermes borrowed symbolism from all blue and white designs of the past.
